Our Adoption & FAQ's
Many of you have asked us various questions about our adoption. Here are some frequently asked questions (and their answers!)....
Which agency did you use? We chose to not use an agency, but rather a type of liaison group, called Adoption Information Services (www.adoptioninfosvcs.com). They facilitate a super-quick adoption (practically guaranteed adoption placement less than 12 months) by assisting us with all the "red-tape", paperwork, and then have good relationships with many agencies throughout the U.S. so that when a birthmother opportunity comes up, they contact us to see if we're interested. I would highly recommend using AIS' services for your or your loved one's adoption! And no, I didn't get paid to say that.
What about the "home study"? A home study's purpose is to ensure that you are fit to be good parents and that your home has the space & safety measures in place for a child. We were told not to worry about the social worker's visit - what great advice! She was pleasant and very kind, and the whole event was not stressful at all. We are using Nathanson Adoption Services, as recommended by AIS. However, even if AIS had not recommended them, I would have recommended them anyway! They are fabulous. www.nathansonadopt.com
Are you adopting within the U.S., NC, or from a foreign country? Since AIS is located in Georgia and they have relationships with agencies throughout the country, our adoption will take place from somewhere within the U.S. borders. We did not choose a foreign adoption, for many reasons (cost, desires for our first baby to look genetically similar to us, simplicity!!).
How are you paying for this? We are having many fundraisers. So far, we've had a huge yard sale and are currently selling cookbooks - these are selling fast, so if you want one, please contact us. The cookbooks feature 490 of my recipes, as well as others from my grandmother passed down through the generations, my mother, mothers-in-law, close friends, cousins, and even friends of friends! :)
New news: We have been selected by www.worthyoftheprize.com to be one of the families featured!! This fabulous blog/website sells Adoption Bands and half of those proceeds go to our adoption expenses!! So check it out, you can go to their website (check out the main flyer at the top of the page explaining how to buy one (and sponsor us!)) or you can buy it right here:
Why not just have a baby of your own? After 8 years and 5 surgeries, we have been told by the nation's best specialists at Duke and UNC that having our own biological child will be impossible. We certainly do not doubt the miracle-producing abilities of our God. We felt led to adoption after much prayer! We are super excited to be parents and appreciate everyone's support through the thick and the thin :)
