Week 3 - Technology try-outs & my first "real" long run

We are in week 3 of my half marathon training.  It's still hard to wrap my mind around that concept.  You see, I am all of 5'1" with a short torso and short legs.  There is literally about a half inch between my bottom ribs and the tops of my hips.  Nope.  This body was not built for running.

But I'm running anyway.

Justin and I are still tweaking our running schedules around each other's running schedules and our crazy life.  This week I ran on Wednesday morning and Thursday evening for my short runs.  Then my long run was on Saturday with Amber.  More on that later.

Wednesday morning was a nice little run.  Since I didn't get up to the 4 miles I wanted the Sunday before, I did 4 miles that morning.  Walked a bit still but I can tell my endurance is improving.  Pretty little sunrise to start the day off just right!

One thing I did try was my husband's Garmin running GPS watch in lieu of using the RunKeeper app.  I LOVED it!!!  Now, these things are not cheap.  So I will not be getting one as fancy as his.  But I am definitely getting one.  This thing does everything for you, and the GPS rarely fails.  It vibrates when you hit whatever milestones you want to hit (time or mileage, or both).  I loved knowing I could just glance at my wrist instead of having to pull my phone out of the Spibelt I was wearing.  Try-outs for this baby was a success!!
These manly hands are my hubby's... not mine... now don't you feel better knowing that? ;)

Thursday night I ran with my fast little friend Alicia.  I will consider this run a "tempo run" because we kept between an 8:30 and a 10 minute pace!  Whew!  I got a mile and a half in and had to walk a little bit :/  If I have to keep up a fast pace, obviously my endurance suffers.  I decided I would cut it a little short and make it a 2 mile run since the pace was so fast.  The last thing I want is an injury to sideline me.  Here's the specs for that run.  No pretty pictures.  No time... we were flying!  Haha!
Sorry for the blurriness... And that average pace is misleading since I walked twice during that recorded run.  Average pace was more like 9 minutes!
The long run is a run that we do when we are training for a longer race like a half.  It's done once a week and the mileage varies from your baseline maximum you can do upwards to the race mileage.  I did 5 miles on Saturday morning with Amber.  I forgot Justin's Garmin GPS watch so I was going to go off of hers.  My goal was to run at least 2.5 miles straight, since I have not yet gotten to that point.

Here's why I love Amber.  We talked so much during our run and she knows how I like to do the bare minimum, so she didn't tell me when we got to the 2.5 mile point.  I ran to 3.25 miles and was a little winded.  So she agreed to walk for a quarter mile and then we ran the rest to 5.1 miles!  I was so proud of myself!!

So although I have no sunrise pics this week, I do have a pic of us after that run (which ended up being 5.65 miles with the cool-down walk).  We enjoyed each other's company & it was definitely the most fun run I've ever had.
Forgive our hair and lack of makeup... this is AFTER, remember!
On a side note, anyone wondering about the Buffalo Creek Greenway at the SRAC... it is gorgeous and we felt very safe (well, maybe having 2 ferocious-looking dogs with us made us feel safe too)...

Here's a pic of the Greenway, although I didn't take it.  I'll give the others the credit for it :)

Looking forward to this week's runs!!! :)
