Zane's Nursery

Many of you have already seen these pics on Facebook, but I wanted to be able to post them here for my bloggy friends and be able to go into more detail about the various elements.

Because I'm kind of a designer at heart, I guess I like to pay attention to detail and share my ideas on decorating with my friends for inspiration.  I'm really proud of how Zane's nursery turned out.  And I think he likes it too!!  Every time I put him in the crib (if I'm cleaning or working close to the nursery), he falls right to sleep & likes to watch his turtles spin on the mobile.  And he LOVES his changing pad - it's his favorite spot.

I wanted it to be a reflection of us, him, his heritage, and have a touch of vintage and nostalgia.  We painted the walls aqua before we knew it was a boy - I just knew I wanted a light blue because it's so soothing.  Just not a fan of "baby blue" so had to find a color that I liked.  But we will get there in a minute... getting ahead of myself.

So here are the BEFORE pics.  Room was a catch-all of workout gear, a treadmill (went back to my parents' house), dog kennel, random stuff!

I found lots of inspiration on the web for the nursery, and discussed my options here.

And without further ado, here are the AFTER pics!!

You can read about how we made the drum shade pendant light here.  And this post describes how I made the no-sew crib skirt (I used the same idea for the no-sew curtains).  Our vintage finds at a supposed haunted house are introduced on this post.  And our search for nursery bedding and our crib were easy & fun!

Here are some details from the room:

I will try to list everything & where I got it, in case you want to know...
  • Brown rug (it has half-dollar size balls that massage your feet!):  TJ Maxx
  • Crib bedding & hamper:  JC Penney online (My Baby Sam line)
  • Matching paisley material on curtains & white waffle-weave material:  The Cloth Barn here in Goldsboro

  • Crib:  Amazon.com
  • Vintage Dresser:  Rosewood Pointe Furniture here in Goldsboro
  • Drawer pulls:  Lowe's
  • Vintage Pepsi Crate used as diaper caddy:  "picked" at the home of an elderly man recently deceased - his son posted an add on Craigslist saying he had tons of vintage items and antiques so we called him & we had a heyday (respectfully of course)
  • Metal sun mirror:  Target
  • Picture frames above dresser:  Michaels
  • Oklahoma postcard:  An OK gift shop downtown
  • Changing pad cover:  Target (online only)
  • Paper lantern lamp on dresser:  have had forever, can't remember where I got it (but it was cheap) :)

  • Rocking chair:  free!  Given to me by my mom!
  • Rocking chair pad:  TJ Maxx
  • Pillow on rocking chair:  gift from one of Justin's work friends.
  • Owl beanie on the rocking chair:  Etsy.  Seller was lesminisjujus.
  • Brown personalized blanket on rocker:  Super Soft Blanket by Thirty-One
  • Basket by window with books:  Medium Magazine Basket by Thirty-One
  • Drum shade:  TJ Maxx
  • Pendant light kit:  Lowe's
  • Wooden curtain rod rings:  Lowe's
  • Silver curtain rod:  Target (I think?)
The dresser was a doozy and what really held us up in getting this room done!  Here's the before pic of the dresser.  Not too bad really, but I wanted white and I wanted modern pulls.  Oh me...

And here's a close up pic of the finished product (well, almost finished)...
This thing was a bear!  It took 2 coats of primer and 2-3 coats of paint.  We didn't like the 70's look of the routed fronts of the cabinet doors, so we decided to flip them around and use the flat fronts.  Great idea (looks good!) but the hinges were not really in the same place, so when we flipped the cabinet doors, the hinges were a little off.  Hence the half-cracked door on the left :)  Hoping to take that door down and skim off some of the top of it so it'll shut properly.

The paint colors:
  • Dresser:  Betsy's Linen by Valspar Ultra Premium
  • Crown Molding:  Ultra White by Valspar (off the shelf)
  • Walls:  Tropical Mist by Valspar Ultra Premium
Hope you like the nursery!  We love it, and feel it's a calming, soothing space that he can grow in.  Our friends took some professional photos of the nursery (and Zane!!) and we are getting ready (right now!!) to go look at the proofs.  Hopefully I can get some of those professionals up here, because my amateur camera & photo skills don't do it justice.
